The old joke about being as “nervous as a whore in church” took a whole new meaning on Sunday. Vice President Mike Pence sat in the pews at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Largo, Maryland where he reportedly became “visibly red-faced” with embarrassment and shame after a black pastor called out his boss’s most recent racist remarks.
Last Thursday, during a meeting with lawmakers concerning immigration, Donald Trump reportedly blurted out:
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to countries mentioned by the lawmakers.
“Why do we need more Haitians?” Trump said, according to people familiar with the meeting. “Take them out.”
According to reports, Trump later went on to suggest that the U.S. should try to let in more people from countries such as Norway.
With Pence in attendance, Pastor Dr. Maurice Watson called out Donald Trump over his “shithole” remarks during Sunday service. The pastor also took exception to Trump’s racial preference toward taking more white immigrants than people of color such as Haitians and Africans.
“I stand today as your Pastor to vehemently denounce and reject any such characterizations of the nations of Africa and of our brothers and sisters in Haiti,” Watson told his congregation as Pence looked on. “And I further say: Whoever made such a statement, whoever used such a visceral, disrespectful, dehumanizing adjective to characterize the nations of Africa… whoever said it, is wrong. And they ought to be held accountable.”
WUSA 9 reported that the vice president “became visibly red-faced at times throughout the speech,” despite the fact that Watson never mentioned Trump by name.
Other than his physical reaction to having his racist boss called out in church, Pence has yet to issue a statement addressing Trump‘s remarks. In fact, Politico reported that Pence’s strategy appears to pretend that nothing happened.
Instead, on Friday afternoon, Pence was tweeting pictures of himself and Trump with Martin Luther King Jr.’s nephew at a White House ceremony and hailing King’s “efforts to peacefully advocate for justice & equality for African-Americans.”
Pence’s visible shame in church speaks volumes for what the white-headed yellow-bellied coward doesn’t have the spine or moral fortitude to say to the public.
